Duo Žan Lan

Updated: Nov 23, 2020

Ciurlionis School of Art.

Duo Žan Lan with performance / concert

Duo Žan Lan, which means exhibition in Mandarin written with Lithuanian spelling, will perform with Tante Nino. Duo Žan Lan consists of Agota Tamelyte from Vilnius and Jonathan Ho Chin Kiat from Singapore.

Žan Lan is an exhibition of audiovisual improvisation, reading original poems and poems by Jonas Mekas and Charles Bukowski. The duo conceptualized in early June, after a culmination of short stories they told each other. Don't expect anything fancy, just a simple and honest alternative art form. The first set consists mainly of fairly improvised music with some images, telling the story of Cat and Jelly. The second set is a reading of two poems with audio effects.

About the artists

Ho was first introduced to music through classical training on the piano. He took up the upright bass and began his formal involvement with the Singaporean jazz scene in 2008. As a participant in the 2nd Mosaic Bright Young Things program organized by Esplanade Theaters by The Bay (Singapore), he met and studied under New York-based and Julliard-trained bassist Andrew Klein. In 2013 he performed at No Black Tie in Kuala Lumpur with Michael Simon, trumpeter from Rotterdam and founder of the Dutch Caribbean Groove Orchestra. This collaboration proved to be crucial in Ho's career, as he now participates in the Codarts Rotterdam Jazz program and studies double bass with the well-known Dutch bass player Stefan Lievestro.

Before leaving for Europe, he met Diego Maroto in the same club and performed in Mexico (Guadalajara Jalisco Jazz Festival) and Japan (Sendai Street Jazz Festival) with the Diego Maroto Asian Trio. He also made a live recording session as part of Deep Straits with Tony Lakatos on No Black Tie and released the album at Borneo Jazz Festival in collaboration with Goethe Institute.

Agota Tamelytė is a young and emerging musician with an interest ranging from classical to free improvisation and electronics. She comes from Lithuania with a strong classical upbringing at the National M.K. Ciurlionis School of Art. She has performed nationally and internationally and established herself in the classical music scene. To refresh her artistic direction, Agota moved to Rotterdam in 2015 and enrolled at Codarts University, where she graduated in jazz piano.

By taking her classical and jazz education, she felt limited by strict settings / rules. Luckily, Agota found her niche becoming familiar with free improvisation and found it appropriate for her artistic personality.

In any kind of creative work, Agota tries to use personal contexts (even non-musical), backgrounds, experiences to express ideas and reconcile them with personal aesthetics. Free improvisation is consistent with her intuitive nature and idea of collective music making with individual creativity. Her artistic goal is to present her perception of past, present and future by applying music techniques and technologies.

All these perspectives are used in her audiovisual project Koška Čias, which recently concluded a tour in Lithuania and recorded an album with Stefan Lievestro on steel guitar. She is currently following Live Electronics Masters at CVA.
